The beginnings of Secret Wars Australia

A friend of ours from London who had been involved in the Secret Wars events there decided that he would give it a go here in Sydney. Through the Winter of 2010 the Sydney street art scene was bought in off the streets and back alleys and into a very public bar on Oxford street for monthly battles between some of its most prominent and influential artists. The rules are simple – 90 minutes on the clock, only black and white ink & paint. Each month 2 new artists battle it out with only 1 winner – judged by the hollering of the patrons and 2 specialist judges, following this rounds of semi finals and eventually the grand final.

The event was a huge success, and in my opinion these guys have been hugely influential in the rise in the popularity of the street art scene here in Sydney. They have since been rolling out yearly seasons in both Sydney & Melbourne along with other additional stand alone events.

Here are a few highlights from the first year.

Everybody loves a freebie!!

A very quiet crowd is watching as the 2 finalists unfold the art.

Season 1 complete. And the 2 grand final peices on display.
